Wix to Shopify Migration

A Comprehensive Step-By-Step Guide 📈

Wix to Shopify Migration

Are you thinking of migrating your store from Wix to Shopify?

That’s a smart move!😎

In 2020, Shopify reported a Gross Merchandise Volume (GMV) of $119.6 billion. While Wix only reported annual revenue of approximately $989 million.

Keeping in mind that they were both founded in 2006, Shopify is definitely doing some things right, which in turn makes them a preferred option for online vendors.

So, migrating your online store from Wix to Shopify can provide your business with the necessary tools and flexibility needed for growth.

Wix has been a popular choice for many small businesses and individuals looking to create a visually appealing website without requiring extensive technical skills.

However, as businesses expand and require more advanced functionalities, I have discovered that they often consider switching to a platform like Shopify, which is designed specifically for e-commerce.

I have worked with several e-commerce businesses, and some have required that I help migrate their store to Shopify.

In this article, I will share insight based on hands-on experience I have acquired over the years.

Before deciding to make the leap from Wix to Shopify, it’s essential to understand the differences between the two platforms and determine if it’s the right choice for your online store.

Migration can be a complex process. And everything can go wrong within a short time.

So, thorough research and planning are necessary to ensure a smooth transition. You’ll need to consider the following before embarking on the migration process;

  • Costs
  • Data transfer requirements
  • Store setup

Before we go further, let’s have a more in-depth look at both platforms;

Wix Vs Shopify 📈

Wix Vs. Shopify

Wix and Shopify are both popular ecommerce platforms designed to help you create and manage your online stores. While they have some similarities, there are also key differences between the two that make each suited to different business needs.

Wix is a versatile website builder known for its ease of use and drag-and-drop functionality. This allows you to create visually appealing websites with little to no prior experience.

Also, Wix offers a number of ecommerce features, such as;

  • Sell physical and digital products
  • Manage inventory
  • Process payments

Wix stores are perfect for small to medium-sized businesses, as they allow for quick store setup and simple design customisation.

Shopify, on the other hand, is a dedicated ecommerce platform focused primarily on providing a comprehensive range of tools for running an online store.

With Shopify, you get more advanced ecommerce features, such as;

  • Multi-currency support
  • Seamless integration with multiple sales channels
  • Wide range of third-party app integrations

Shopify platform is ideal for businesses of any size that are solely focused on ecommerce and are looking for a powerful platform with room to grow.

Both Wix & Shopify have their pros and cons when you take an unbiased look at it.

If you’re in need of a simple online store and a visually striking website, Wix might be the better option for you. However, if your business goals involve more advanced ecommerce functionality and scaling potential, Shopify would likely be the better option.

Why Migrate from Wix to Shopify

In this section, I will be sharing with you why businesses migrate from Wix to Shopify based on my experience and research;

#1 Broader Range of Features

One of the main reasons for migration is access to a broader range of features and functionalities. Shopify is a leading e-commerce platform.

It offers a wider selection of e-commerce tools and features to cater to virtually any type of online store. This includes inventory management, marketing integrations, and built-in payment processing.

#2 Scalability

As your business grows, you will find out that you need a platform that can keep up with the increasing demands.

Shopify is known for its ability to scale. This means that your website can handle more traffic, process more orders, and accommodate an expanding product catalogue.

#3 Flexible Customisation

Shopify’s large app ecosystem offers a remarkable level of customisation.

With thousands of apps available, you will likely find an app that fits your specific needs and enhances your customer’s shopping experience. This level of customisation can help your business stand out from its competitors.

When it comes to website design, Shopify offers an extensive range of both free and paid themes that can cater to different styles, industries, and requirements.

These themes are generally more focused on e-commerce than Wix’s templates. This e-commerce-focused theme ensures that your online store has the right design to drive sales and conversions easily.

#4 24/7 Customer Support

Customer support is an essential consideration for any business, and Shopify excels in this area. They offer round-the-clock support through various means, such as phone, email, and live chat, ensuring that help is readily available when you need it.

Setting Up Your Shopify Store

Shopify setup

Before I talk about how to migrate your store from Wix to Shopify. Let me walk you through the basic steps for setting up a Shopify store.

Step 1 – Signing Up

To begin, head over to the Shopify website and sign up for a new account. You will be guided through the setup process with a series of prompts. This process is as simple as filling out any online form.

Step 2 – Choosing a Preferred Theme

Once you have created your account, Shopify will present you with a variety of themes to choose from. Most of the themes available on Shopify are both visually appealing and easily customisable.

And not to worry, there is a whole lot of them for you to choose from. You will definitely find an option that suits your brand’s identity.

Step 3 – Shopify Plan

When it comes to pricing, Shopify offers a selection of plans to cater to businesses of all sizes.

The packages usually come with different features. The major difference is usually with the reporting and number of staff that can be added to a single account.

Be sure to consider your needs carefully as you choose a suitable plan. If you are just trying Shopify out for the first time and working with a tight budget – you can go for the basic plan.

Step 4 – UI/UX

As you progress through the setup, you will notice that Shopify already provides user-friendly features such as a streamlined mobile experience, flexible payment options, and highly customisable checkout processes. Your customers will appreciate these elements as they navigate your store and make purchases.

Step 5 – Installing Third-party Tools

In addition to the built-in features that Shopify offers, there are also available apps and integrations in their marketplace that can help enhance your site further.

These range from;

  • Marketing tools
  • Social media integrations
  • Shipping management

Step 6 – SEO

One important aspect of switching from Wix to Shopify is ensuring that your store retains its SEO value.

Thankfully, Shopify accommodates SEO-friendly URL structures, which will help drive traffic to your new store. Moreover, you can further optimise your site by using the SEO tools and features built into the dashboard.

Before Migration Considerations

Before migrating from Wix to Shopify, it’s important to note a couple of things to ensure a smooth and successful transfer.

The first thing is to make sure you have a solid understanding of both platforms. If you are not familiar with Shopify, you will need to familiarise yourself with the basic interface and advanced features available on Shopify.

The Shopify App Store contains a ton of apps that can help you customise your new store, so be sure to explore it as much as you want.

Also, in order to migrate essential store elements like products, inventory, pages, orders, files, and customers, you’ll need to prepare/organise your data properly.

Exporting your data as a CSV file from your Wix store is a good way to transfer this information.

It is also important to backup copies of any important store database information before you start the migration.

During the transfer process, it’s important to maintain the organisation of your product categories, inventory levels, and order data.

A common problem that you can encounter is when your source and target cart data are not structurally compatible. So, make sure to align the CSV file properly with your new Shopify store structure.

Keep in mind that the design and templates of your Wix site might not be directly transferrable to Shopify.

Therefore, be prepared to invest some time adapting or creating a new store design using available Shopify templates.

SEO plays a crucial role in attracting organic traffic to your online store.

During the migration, ensure that your store’s URLs, meta titles, and descriptions remain consistent or are updated with proper redirects to avoid losing search engine rankings.

It might also be a good time to review and optimise your SEO strategies for better search performance on Shopify.

Migration Process – Wix to Shopify

Automated Solutions

There are several automated migration tools available, such as Cart2Cart and LitExtension, that can help you transfer your store data from Wix to Shopify.

These tools offer a free demo migration to let you test their services before opting for a full migration.

They support a wide range of data types, including products, customers, order statuses, and more.

Keep in mind that while helpful, automated migration tools may not cover all data entities or customisations.

Manual Migration

If you prefer a more hands-on approach, you can manually migrate your Wix store data to Shopify.

To do this, start by exporting your data from Wix into CSV files. You’ll then need to organise and format your CSV files according to Shopify’s requirements before importing them into your new Shopify store.

This method can be time-consuming but allows for a more tailored and controlled migration process.

Post-Migration Activities

After completing the migration, whether automated or manual, it’s crucial to check your Shopify store’s data for accuracy.

Pay special attention to product details, inventory management, customer information, order history, and payment processing.

You should also create a 301 redirects. This ensures that your customers can find your store’s new location, and it will also help you to maintain SEO rankings.

Potential Migration Challenges

Here are some common potential migration challenges i have experinced over the year and how to fix them:

#1 Data Transfer Issues

  • Challenge: Transferring data like product listings, customer information, and content from Wix to Shopify can be complex and may result in data loss or errors.
  • Solution: You can use dedicated migration tools or services that can automate the data transfer process. This will reduce the risk of data loss. Carefully review the data after migration to ensure accuracy.

#2 Theme and Design Differences

  • Challenge: Shopify and Wix have different theme systems and design structures, which can lead to incompatibility with design during migration.
  • Solution: You’ll have to choose a Shopify theme that aligns with your Wix design and customise it to match your previous look and feel. This may require some more work, such as, design and coding adjustments.

#3 SEO and URL Structure

  • Challenge: Changing your website’s URL structure can negatively impact your SEO rankings, causing a drop in organic traffic.
  • Solution: Create URL redirects for important pages to maintain SEO continuity. Use Shopify’s built-in SEO tools to optimise your new website for search engines.

#4 Functionality Gaps

  • Challenge: Shopify and Wix have different sets of features and functionalities, and some custom features on your Wix site may not have direct equivalents on Shopify.
  • Solution: What i do is prioritise the most critical features and functionalities, then find Shopify apps or custom development solutions to replicate them. You should assess which features you can do without and plan accordingly.

#5 Content Migration

  • Challenge: Transferring content such as blog posts, images, and videos can be time-consuming and may require manual adjustments.
  • Solution: Export your content from Wix and import it into Shopify. Review and format the content as needed to ensure it fits seamlessly into your new website.

#6 Payment Gateway and Checkout Settings

  • Challenge: Shopify has its own payment gateway system, and migrating payment settings can be complex, potentially disrupting your online transactions.
  • Solution: Set up your payment gateway on Shopify, ensuring it matches your previous payment options. Test transactions thoroughly to verify everything works as expected.

#7 Downtime and Customer Impact

  • Challenge: Migrating a live website can result in temporary downtime, affecting user experience and sales.
  • Solution: Plan your migration during off-peak hours and notify customers in advance about potential downtime. Monitor the site closely during and after the migration to address any issues promptly.
